We recently went away on a much-needed holiday to the UK to try to catch some snow and reindeers! Spoiler: we didn't see any snow. We spent a few days in London before starting the drive up to Cairngorms (Scotland) and as it was a fairly long drive, we decided to split it into two days. That meant that we had time to make a little detour to Yorkshire Sculpture Park to visit Florian Gadsby's exhibition!
Bakewell
We chose to stay the night in a quaint little town called Bakewell and our only regret was not spending more time there.
Just look at it - Bakewell is so picturesque and charming! It was only an hour's drive away from Yorkshire Sculpture Park, where Florian Gadsby's exhibition was held.
Being city kids, the lovely country roads stole our hearts!
Yorkshire Sculpture Park
The first thing that hit us when we finally reached Yorkshire Sculpture Park was just how vast it was! That was when we knew we probably should have set aside a lot more time to explore the park. We managed to catch some snaps of the grounds before we headed indoors for the exhibition.
'By My Hands' by Florian Gadsby
By My Hands is a celebration of Florian Gadsby's remarkable journey as a ceramic artist and features a whole new line of work. For this exhibition, Florian made a limited edition series of small angular vases of which the proceeds would be donated to support YSP's charitable work.
We are loving the winter decoration on the glass walls!
Just look at the dreamy decor of the indoor space!
The glass wall decor casts a beautiful shadowy effect onto Florian's line of angular vases, that were all sold out when we visited!
Florian's pottery wheel was also on the display, along with some of the tools and test tiles that he used
Florian's exhibition extended to the second floor of the indoor section of the park and we caught a glimpse of his trademark vessels that he is well-known for. Since photos are worth a thousand words, we shall not bore you with details so... enjoy the following snaps of the rest of his exhibition!
Trap of the Truth by Erwin Wurm
We were lucky enough to be at YSP when there was another sculptural exhibition going on. Featuring more than 100 works, Trap of the Truth was created by one of Austria's most prominent artists, Erwin Wurm. Famous for his 'one-minute' sculptures, Erwin used ludicrous scenarios to create work for this exhibition that illustrates how we conform to society's demands. Surreal, absurd and humorous, the peculiar sights of the huge sculptures scattered around the park piqued our interest and will definitely grab anyone's attention.
In other sections of the park, there were also other sculptural works by highly acclaimed North American artist, Daniel Arsham. Arsham's sculptures appear as archaeological remnants of our time that he describes as 'future relics'.
Back on the road
Alas, all good things must come to an end. This is us commencing on our 6+ hours drive up to Scotland but hey, we aren't complaining as the scenery (usually) is amazing, when it is clear!
Well, we had another thing to look forward to at the end of our long drive - our lovely accommodation up in Cairngorms, Cambus O'May Hotel. A couple had taken over and refurbished this Victorian building that was actually built in 1874. We just had to share about this absolute gem that we loved staying at !
And to end it off, we are leaving you with this snap of the Balmoral Castle to give you a sense of wanderlust!
